The Basketball Hall of Fame mourns the death of legendary coach Guy V. Lewis, Class of 2013.
“The Basketball Hall of Fame lost part of its family today with the passing of Guy Lewis,” said President & CEO John Doleva. “On a day that celebrates family and giving thanks, many in the basketball world will be thinking of Coach Lewis for his mentorship, guidance and leadership throughout his lifetime. He impacted so many people both on and off the court, especially in the Houston community."
Lewis coached the University of Houston Cougars for 30 years, making five Final Four appearances and accumulating nearly 600 wins. Widely known as the Father of Phi Slama Jama, he helped propel the careers of future Hall of Famers Elvin Hayes, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Clyde Drexler.
